Infant Center

The first year life is a critical time for brain development, as well social and emotional development. Our Infant program teachers have specialized training to ensure that they are not only providing excellent childcare but are also beginning the learning process that will allow each baby to observe his/her surroundings in a fun, loving and nurturing environment.

Daily Schedule

MATH

Infants learn and use their senses to learn about the world around them. Therefore, we provide opportunities for them to experience learning through engaging in hands-on opportunities.

Concepts are taught to toddlers through everyday routines and interactions. We offer toys and objects that teach numbers, patterns, colors, shapes, and one-to-one relationships. We incorporate counting games, number songs, and read books that use numbers and counting. Open-ended questions are asked to help develop
problem-solving skills.

ART

Our little ones begin to show wonder or fascination with objects, activities and experiences. They gaze at objects, become quiet or vocal when they hear lullabies. The children show bodily excitement when they hear music. AMTCDC provide materials that are suitable for the age and development of the children. Our materials consist of musical mobiles for infants to watch and listen, pictures and photographs are placed at eye level for infants and toddlers to spark conversation, a variety of sensory materials are placed both indoors and outdoors, such as Play-Doh, finger paint, chalk, sand, and mud. Pictures of the children will be taken (with parent permission) to help children recall what they have done and to help families appreciate the creative processes.

LANGUAGE

AMTCDC collaboratively works with families to understand cultures and languages. Children develop language through reciprocal relationships which are formulated with families and teachers. Teachers make a strong effort to learn and speak the languages that represent the children in their care. They research words and greetings.
They learn to speak the cultural languages, words for favorite people, things, and words or phrases for common events and routines.

Language is one of the most critical components needed for children to communicate. Our goals for each child (birth to 60+months) are to teach (literacy) comprehension of spoken language, following direction, communicating ideas, speak in sentences, hear small units of sound, identify rhyme and alliteration. We try to encourage children to have an appreciation for reading. We offer books, felt story boards, puppets, play theatre, puzzles, our library and listening center.

AMTCDC recognizes that children with disabilities may need extra support when they are communicating with others. Therapy and listening devices may be provided to help them hear and that enhances their learning. The use of sounds and words in the classroom and the language acquisition, helps the children communicate more proficiently.

We present opportunities for infants to learn how to communicate. We encourage development of language by making sounds, making eye contact, and taking turns, while playing communication games, such as (peek-a-boo). We teach and demonstrate hand gestures and sign language, which are appropriate for infants and toddlers. Our infants and toddlers learn to listen to different sounds, to describe objects, that are in our indoors and outdoors environment. We use a positive tone and speak in an encouraging way. We talk about what they are hearing, seeing, feeling, smelling, and tasting to encourage positive behavior.

SCIENCE/HEALTH

AMTCDC science themes consist of health and physical development, scientific exploration, construction/building, thinking and reasoning. These areas cover processes and skills such as making observations, comparing and classifying objects, problem solving, and making predictions to support learning. Health and physical development focus on physical growth and motor skills that promote physical fitness. Sound nutritional choices and self-care include health and safety practices. Children also learn about healthy eating habits.

Infants and toddlers are given a variety of sensory experiences. These experiences include exploring and learning through their sense of smell, hearing, touch, and movement. Materials are ready and available in our centers for all children birth through 36 months. Teachers provide routines, real-life situations and learning opportunities that help infants and toddlers acquire knowledge of new concepts.

AMTCDC believes in inclusion for ALL children. Inclement weather is also used as an
experience and opportunity to learn about the world around them. The children can go
outside and play during this time, if the conditions of weather are not severe.

SOCIAL STUDIES/TECHNOLOGY

A Mother’s Touch Child Development Center believes that children’s ability to identify
and demonstrate acceptance of similarities and differences with other people is based on opportunities. Teachers and caregivers must model acceptance and respect for others. Teachers embrace the opportunities to teach the importance of accepting people who are similar and different from ourselves. They incorporate opportunities for children to learn about history, various cultures, community, and the world around them.

Children learn about the different cultures of the families in our program during daily encounters. Cultural awareness and experiences are promoted in the centers. We provide books, pictures, toys, music, and other materials that are familiar to children. We take field trips to events and places such as parks, playgrounds, farmers market, local farms, and the elderly living centers. Children learn more about the community and world, in which we live.

Children are allowed hands on experience and exposure to technology. They use tablets, which reinforce knowledge gained during each week. They use correlating software radio, tablets, and CD’s for all subject matter.

Infants have opportunities to learn about the world around them through social interactions. Experiences include learning about places, home, school, celebrations, work, and community. They learn about their physical and emotional abilities. Teachers discuss with children things that they may see, hear and feel. Parents are asked to send pictures of family members to aid in social and emotional adjustment during certain times of the day. Teachers read books and use materials during small and large group time to expose children to culture understanding. We take walks in the community with the children, communicating what they may see, hear, and smell in the environment.
Screen time, including television, videos, video games, and computer usage, shall be prohibited for children under three years of age.
